So last night I rebuilt my PC with Media Center Edition, somthing I have been putting off for some time. Due to the epic nightmare it always turns out to be. Antics that followed :

    • Discovered didn’t have the drivers around for my SATA raid controller
    • Found drivers
    • Realised Cant install them from USB device as Windows will only look for them on A: drive
    • Spend 20 minutes looking for a floppy disk
    • Find floppy disk to find my floppy drive wont format it ( probably has had a strop through lack of attension
    • Think Stuff it ill use the SATA 133 controller instead of the SATA 150 ( morale you can never have enough controllers on the mother board )
    • All is well windows installs in record time ( about 10 minutes, despite telling me at the start this was going to last 39 minutes).

So I have got MCE up and running and immediately install the Xbox Media Center Extender software so I can connect my Xbox 360. This install takes quite an age though I suspect the large part of it was MCE indexing the music pictures and videos etc from my NAS box.

Got the whole thing up and running and can browse most of my mp3s on 360 ( most its still indexing got to 8800 tracks about now, probably NAS’s fault its not v quick ). Couple of odd things, MCE on the PC and MCE extender appear to keep separate metabases of your media files. most annoying of all the thing appears to be written to NOT PLAY XVID’s. GRRRR

Update : It seem the people at www.runtime360.com are on the case with DIVX and are writing a program called transcode ( currently beta 4.1 )

From palgn.com.au “Microsoft might have claimed its Xbox 360 was unhackable, but, four months removed from the American launch, a hacking team led by ‘The Specialist’ has managed to get a pirate copy of Project Gotham Racing 3 running on a hacked machine. To achieve this, the 360 DVD drive had to have the firmware modified (by inserting a modded 360 game, among other things), allowing pirate discs to run as the drive no longer looks for a special code that can only be found on legal discs. However, ‘The Specialist’ and his band of merry men won’t be distributing their firmware modifications, as they don’t support piracy - only legitimate homebrew (which this does not provide), and the challenge of hacking itself. Hmm. Still, now the secret is out, you can bet on people with slightly more dubious morals replicating the process unfortunately. It’s worth noting though that this method does NOT bypass region locking.YouTube has a video online, if you’re curious in seeing it in action (or the inside of a 360, for that matter).”

Update 1: the register just posted this article ( note two hours after i posted about it, In your face register )

Update 2: xbox-scene has much better article explaining in detail how the hack works by modding the fireware of the dvd drive to fool the xbox 360 into thinking the DVD-R is infact xbox360 media here

After receiving my Xbox360 remote, on Monday I must admit I had very little enthusiasm fo rthe thing. I only took it out of the packageing last night (mainly due to bordem) took it downstairs and put the batteries in. Wondering if I would be able to use it on my original Xbox. Once the batteries in to my delight, the whole thing is backlit with green led’s (blue conversion someone!) which is fab, then is programed it to be able to control my Tele.

Then WHAMMY! i had a very cool remote, that not only could turn on and off my tele ( have four remotes in the lounge currently that can do that ) but also adjust the volume and change channel (dont use my tele to change channel as i have sky).

All in all if your looking for an remote on/off button and may be some way of raising and lowering the volume on your tele ( note: on your tele not your AV amp) and have very low lighting in your lounge, then this is the remote for you.

Adding some storage capacity to your Xbox 360 is really easy to do. The best part about using a USB hard drive with your 360 is that YOU have control of what content you have on it. With the factory Xbox hard drive you cannot load any content to it unless its acquired from Live or ripped form CD’s. That does not do much for us that want our MP3 collection on our Xbox 360’s now. I’m not up for re-ripping my CD’s again, nor am I satisfied with streaming as the only means of accessing MY media. I do bring my Xbox all over the place and would LOVE to be abut to use MY content. Hear that Bill, J Allard or Major Nelson.. I bet I am not the only one ;). I don’t think the horse is dead yet, is it? Well I will just keep saying it till its delivered via Live or the mod scene works it out. more………………….
